Olympus

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece and is world-renowned both for its ecological features and unparalleled natural beauty, as well as for its connection to ancient Greek mythology, since it was believed that the Twelve Olympian Gods resided at its summit (Mytikas, 2,918 meters above sea level) was believed to be the home of the Twelve “Olympian” Gods according to the religion of the ancient Greeks.

The striking diversity of the terrain, the varying orientation of the slopes, the rock formations, the great height, and the short distance of the peaks from the sea influence the climate in certain areas, resulting in local microclimate conditions that favor the development of specific types of vegetation and characteristic habitats.

The Monasteries of Meteora

Meteora is a cluster of massive, dark-colored sandstone cliffs that rise up just outside Kalambaka, near the foothills of the Pindus and Chasia mountains.

Rising from the plains of Thessaly on towering sandstone pillars, the monasteries of Meteora are among the most awe-inspiring sights in all of Europe. Six of the original thirty monasteries remain active today and are open to visitors. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, Meteora is an easy and deeply rewarding full-day trip from Zeus Hotel, offering a dramatic contrast to the coastal scenery of Platamonas.

For hikers, Mount Olympus is a special place. There are organized hiking trails that start from Litochoro, Dion, and Petra.

Summer ascents of the mythical mountain of the gods usually begin in early June and end in late September. This is the season when the mountain huts below the peaks are open and the weather allows for a climb without the snow gear and mountaineering experience required in winter. The two most beautiful routes for exploring Mount Olympus start from Litochoro and reach the mountain’s peaks.

The most notable route is the European Long-Distance Trail E4. It runs westward from Litochoro toward the peaks, through the Enipeas Gorge. Additionally, the National Long-Distance Trail O2 connects the peaks southward toward Pelion.

Along the way, benches near springs offer welcome moments of rest and reflection. Informational signs with National Park maps and useful instructions are also available throughout. For those with more time, ascending via one trail and descending via the other is a highly rewarding experience. In that case, spending a night at the mountain huts is strongly recommended.

Island Day Trips — The Northern Sporades

Skiathos

The most cosmopolitan of the Sporades, Skiathos is famous for its turquoise waters and some of the finest sandy beaches in Greece — including the celebrated Koukounaries, Banana, and Lalaria beaches. The island’s charming town offers waterfront restaurants, local craft shops, and a lively harbour atmosphere. An excellent choice for a memorable one-day island excursion

Skopelos

Lush, green, and unhurried, Skopelos is the quieter alternative to Skiathos — and all the more beautiful for it. Over 60% of the island is forested, and its picturesque whitewashed villages, pebble coves, and numerous clifftop chapels make it a photographer’s paradise. Internationally known as the filming location for the movie Mamma Mia!, Skopelos offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and Greek island charm.

Vergina — Royal Tombs of Aegae (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
